"I knew it was going to be good, but not this good - it's everything I had hoped for and more...St Mellion is potentially the finest golf course in Europe." - Jack Nicklaus
When the greatest golfer ever to have trodden the world’s fairways pays such eloquent tribute to a course the golfing world is bound to sit up and take notice. The completed masterpiece officially opened on July 10th 1988 with a celebration match between Jack Nicklaus & Tom Watson and Nick Faldo & Sandy Lyle. In fact such was the success of this match a re-match was played in 1989.
In 1990 The Nicklaus Signature Course hosted one of the major European Tour events when it staged the Benson & Hedges International Open. This event ran for 6 consecutive years with some notable winners including Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Bernhard Langer. Olazabal was quoted stating, "St Mellion is one of the finest golf courses in the world." During this time discussions also took place to host the Ryder Cup in 1993.
The course itself is both stunning to look at and play and there are so many outstanding, memorable holes that choosing a favourite can be difficult. St Mellion has its own version of Augusta's Amen Corner included within this run of holes is the 11th hole, which is the Signature hole of the course followed by one of the UK's finest Par 5's.
The 12th hole embodies the vision of our course more than any other hole, arriving on the tee fills you with equal measure of excitement and fear but you will never forget it. As with any great golf course the 18th hole should be the climax of the round and have a sense of thearte about it. A lake protects the green and the hole runs alongside the clubhouse so with spectators guaranteed there is no better way to complete your round. This is a golf course that it a must to play and brings you back time and time again.
The Nicklaus Signature Course is one of two 18-hole courses set within the 450 acres of the Resort. The original course built in 1976 recently re-named Kernow Course offers wide fairways and large inviting greens that meanders it's way through the estate and is a joy to play. This course gives all golfers an opportunity for a birdie but has a few inviting lakes and bunkers, which await an errant shot. Although no longer used on the European Tour this course can boast an impressive staging of 3 Tour events.
In 2009 a new 80-bedroom hotel & clubhouse opened offering contemporary accommodation with rooms overlooking the 18th hole, there is also 3 swimming pools, large fitness suite and after your round you can visit the Spa for a massage or treatment. Our food offering suit all tastes from fining dining to good locally sourced produce in our Brasserie and our aptly named Nicklaus Bar overlooking the finishing hole.
St Mellion is situated in the heart of the West Country on the Devon & Cornwall border, which is regarded as the most stunning and scenic part of the UK. The region is blessed with stunning beaches and picturesque fishing ports as well as popular attractions such as the Eden Project. Our location is ideal for air (3 airports) and direct rail links from anywhere in the UK.
