This 18-hole championship golf course was the first design from Jack Nicklaus on mainland Europe. According to his own statement, he "took great pleasure creating the course in this beautiful environment."
Jack used three criteria when designing the course:
"First, golf should be much more a game of the precision than the power. Secondly, a player is rewarded who uses his head before his muscles. Thirdly, the original landscape should not be destroyed and merely accommodate the playing facility."
The project was realized with much courage, vision, and engagement in direct vicinity of the festival city Salzburg, a city known internationally for its art and culture. Gut Altentann presents international standards for a high quality of life, and club members enjoy a variety of sport and leisure time possibilities in a private atmosphere. The attractive environment offers sailing, surfing, hunting, skiing and ice-skating, depending on time of year.
The "PGA Austrian Open" was played here in 1990, 1991, and 1992. The course record is held by Des Smyth, the Irish golfer. During the Austrian Open in 1990, Des took 62 shots (10 under Par) to complete the round.
Gut Altentann, a partnership product with nature, connects international friends of the golf sport in the heart of Europe.
