Early in the new millennium, when the Chapelco Golf Club started to take shape, there was no doubt that one of the best golf courses in Argentina was being created. Lying a few kilometers away from the city and airport of San Martín de los Andes, and surrounded by the spectacular environment provided by Argentinean Patagonia, this is the ideal destination for an unforgettable experience.
Jack Nicklaus made contact with this project through Jorge Taylor, a tireless and enterprising local rancher. Thus, the Chapelco Golf Club became the first course in South America to be co-designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II. Naturally, it is part of the Jack Nicklaus International Golf Club (JNIGC), an exclusive international club network that includes over 100 courses laid out by Nicklaus Design.
The course, one section of the Chapelco Golf & Resort, was inaugurated in February, 2006 and is surrounded by the most picturesque mountain range in the Andes. The natural terrain variations and local vegetation were respected during its construction. This combination offers a golf course with the most attractive images.
It could be said that each hole is a real postcard. Hole 12 is the best-known, as it features a view taken by Nicklaus' prestigious photographer, Jim Mandeville.
This 437-yard par 4 was cover of the Jack Nicklaus 2006 Golf Calendar and it overlooks the mountain range from a challenging frontal hazard which then gives way to a winding fairway that fades away amidst the pines.
But this is not only about the beautiful scenery. Essentially, it comprises the course’s challenging competition level, the chance to stay at the Loi Suites Hotel Chapelco (the only 5-star resort in the city), the exclusive fishing lodge called El Casco Viejo, the wide range of gastronomical options at the Club House and the quietness offered by the City of San Martín de los Andes.
Within a very short period, Chapelco Golf & Resort has become one of the best chosen destinations by the strictest golfers, both from Argentina and abroad. It is completely worth traveling to Patagonia to combine golf in its purest state and the traditional local activities, such as fly-fishing, horse-riding and outdoor sports.
